I Am... Snack Saturdays: Pierre Hermè's Montebello
Happy Saturday Everyone! I've decided on a new feature for 2014 - Snack Saturdays. Every Saturday I'll feature something I've been snacking on, whether it be fancy, like these decadent Pierre Hermè pastries, or simple, like a newly discovered favourite brand of chips. Mostly it'll be an excuse for me to eat lots of snacks and practice my photography.

The first time I had taquitos I was in the middle of an epic fight with an old ex-boyfriend. It was so long ago that I don't remember what the fight was about. And to be honest, I don't remember much about him at all. We weren't fighting when we sat down and ordered, but by the time the drinks arrived we were both fuming silently.

I don't know about you but I love a good snow storm and all the recent crazy photos of snow are making me nostalgic for my snow-filled childhood. Don't get me wrong, Tokyo is wonderful in the winter, but the one thing that it doesn't have is snow. The winters are really dry here, which means it's sunny, cold and lovely everyday, but I do miss the quiet stillness that happens when it snows.

Are you guys as obsessed with grilled cheese sandwiches as I am? I am a true grilled cheese lover. And adding a egg just blows all other grilled cheeses out of the water. Technically this recipe isn't a grilled cheese at all, just a single slice of bread with cheese fused to it's outsides, but it's cheese and it's grilled so I'm not going to argue technicalities. If we did want to get into the technicalities of naming of recipes, I think the egg-in-toast part of this recipe confuses me as well.

2014 is fast approaching and with the coming of the new year, there are always resolutions to eat better and be healthier. I'm all for healthy eating and living, but there's still time to indulge my friends! And nothing is more indulgent than this spam fried rice.

I'm in the land of mochi, sushi and all things kawaii and I'm loving it! If you've never had mochi before, you should definitely try it. Mochi is kind of hard to describe with it's gooey chewiness, but all you really need to know is that it's mostly about the texture and its texture is delicious! Mochi is made from short grain sticky rice and as a result, is quite sticky, as well as neutral flavoured. This opens up a lot of possibilities when working with mochi. It's often used in delicate Japanese sweets or wrapped around ice cream, but my favourite way to enjoy mochi is on the more savoury side of things.

December is perfect for long, lingering breakfasts by the fire. In my perfect world, me and Mike would be cozy in our kitchen nook (doesn't exist) overlooking the freshly snow covered forest-y backyard (I live in a high rise). There'd be a couple of shy deer at the salt lick and a few curious bunnies by the edge of my lawn (the only wildlife in the city are raccoons). Inside, there would most definitely be a fire (wish I had a fireplace), a huge pot of coffee, and miso toast soldiers with soft boiled eggs (this I can do!).

Let me start off by saying that before this post I have never eaten chicken fried steak. It's not a big dish in Vancouver and I actually don't see it on menus all to often, even while travelling. Apparently I haven't been travelling to the right places, because chicken fried steak is A. Big. Deal. When I first came across the name, I was confused. Chicken? Steak? Was it chicken, steak or other?

I'm fresh off the plane from my trip to Australia, and the one thing that stuck out for me about the land down under, aside from the abundance of cute marsupials, is the fact that they LOVE pies. There were so many pie places, it was crazy. I think their official food might be meat pie. Pies and sausage rolls. They were sold everywhere: coffee shops, random street stands, and of course they had several dedicated pie only shops.

Happy December! It's my most favorite time of year! I love, love, love Christmas and even though I won't be home in Vancouver this year, I'm still going to be celebrating. December is one of my favorite months - full of friends, family and of course food. It's always good to have little nibbles on hand for all those folks who drop by and these mini spinach bread bowls are perfect for popping into the oven and eating while piping hot.

I am a brussel sprout fiend. It wasn't always so, but now, I am a true brussel sprout lover. Growing up we never ate brussel sprouts. I'm thinking that it's partially due to the fact that brussel sprouts don't feature prominently in Chinese food and partially due to my mom thinking that they were a vegetable that kids didn't like to eat. Considering how picky I was about food, it was a pretty safe bet on her part. I had heard from other kids about the horror of brussel sprouts so I was pretty happy that I never had to eat them.

Is there any better brunch food than fried chicken and waffles? They may not be as traditional and bacon and eggs or toast and jam, but chicken and waffles definitely go together. Chicken and waffles are the ultimate American breakfast dish and I first had it in LA at the place to go: Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles. I heard of Roscoe's thanks to Snoop Dogg. Or, well, I guess he's known as Snoopzilla now. Anyway, any man that can pull off his crazy suits is tops in my books.
