I Am... Earl Grey Tea Latte Pancake Recipe

Are you willing to line up for food? I'm not talking about a quick 20 minute line up that moves at a brisk pace, I'm talking about waiting in line for hours just to get a taste of something you've heard is good. I'm pretty much a sucker for hype and have totally waited in lineups not knowing what I was getting into. Even with my history of patient waiting, I've found that the line ups here in Tokyo put me to shame. There are literally queues for anything and everything that has a whiff of hype.

I Am... Calamari Carbonara Recipe

Clearly, I love eggs. In fact, eggs are one of the most tagged items on this blog. I love eggs almost as much as I love potatoes and noodles. And, depending on my mood, maybe even a little more so because they're kind of sort of good for you. Protein packed and in their own convenient little eco-friendly packaging (shell), eggs are  nature's perfect food. I know science goes between saying that eggs are good/bad for you, but I figure, everything in moderation is always a good thing.

I Am... Slow Scrambled Eggs Recipe

You might think this is a strange recipe. After all, why on earth would anyone feel the need to share how they make scrambled eggs? Truth: these are nothing like "regular" scrambled eggs. These eggs are creamy, decadent and luscious. These, my friends, are slow scrambled.

I Am... Potato Domino Recipe

You know those "All About Me" booklets they have you do in Kindergarten? You draw a picture of yourself, your family, your house, and a bunch of your favourite things. (Do they still do this?) My first couple of pages looked a little like this: Stick drawing of me, with super-long hair, another stick drawing of my parents and brother and a square with a triangle roof for my house. Then we would get into the favourites. My drawing of my favourite food was brown lumps and worm-like lines. Guesses?

I Am... Lemon Meringue French Toast Recipe

It's February already, can you believe it? Soon, Spring will be right around the corner, but in the meantime, February means Valentine's Day, which means an influx of heart-shaped sweets and pink. I happen to love hearts and pink things, so I'm not complaining. Valentine's also happens to be the anniversary of my first post on I am a Food Blog.

I Am... Broccoli and Cheddar Grilled Cheese Recipe

I love snowboarding. I love the snow, the speed and the sound your board makes as you carve through fresh powder. One of me and Mike's favourite spots is the glacier on Whistler. You have to take a rope tow (not particularly fun on a board) and there's a bit of a hike (actually, a massively steep hike depending on how much snow there is) but the reward is a giant bowl of virtually untouched snow. It's immensely wide, which means you can spread out and pretty much do anything and everything.

I Am... Sriracha Caramel Corn Recipe

I'm not the type to enjoy the Super Bowl (give me the Puppy Bowl any day!) but I must I am intrigued by game day food. From what I can tell, game day food can be, but is not limited to: pizza, wings, dips, chips, nachos, sandwiches, and anything with cheese. I enjoy all of these foods immensely and therefore have concluded that I am a fan of the Super Bowl. I definitely understand the need to eat while watching TV or a movie. My wants in a snack: sweet, salty, spicy and crunchy.

I Am... Ushi No Kura

Tokyo is full of food. Walk down any major street and you'll be surprised by the sheer amount of restaurants. Even on tiny side streets you come across tiny dedicated storefronts selling roasted sweet potatoes, mochi, or rice rice crackers. Tokyo is a city where you can specialize. Take the sweet potato store: there might be a bit of variation, say, purple sweet potatoes, or yellow-fleshed sweet potatoes in addition to the traditional satsumaimo. But those are small deviations - the store sells just potatoes. And somehow, in this city of 13 and a half million, they survive. Sometimes they might even have a little line up.

I Am... Mushroom Onion Tart Recipe

When we were teenagers, my mom used to stock the freezer up with loads of frozen foods for me and my brother to bake up or microwave on a whim. Back in the day Kevin and I didn't really have any real interest in cooking. We were more interested in ease and convenience. Even though it's probably going to kill any foodie cred I have (as if I have any!), I'm going to admit it for you right now: I love frozen food. I hang my head in shame, but really, even in shame, at least I'll get to eat well. Unleash me on the frozen foods section at Costco and you'll see what true happiness is.

I Am... Snack Saturdays: Calbee KFC Potato Chips

Japan is the land of wacky salty snacks. Much to Mike's dismay, I love wandering around the endless snack aisles. To the untrained eye, all the colorful packages look the same, but a closer look reveals Mountain Dew Cheetos; foie, truffle and red wine chips; and Kewpie mayo. I haven't tried any of those yet, but when I heard about a cross promotion between KFC and Calbee chips, I knew I would be buying a package or two.

I Am... Sriracha Roasted Cauliflower Recipe

I am a huge fan of cauliflower. I know some people who think cauliflower should be banned from cruditè platters, but I actually love it raw. You can always count on me to finish off those crunchy white florets of goodness. Of course, if I happen to have a ziplock bag on hand, you might find me scooping up those pre-cut florets to bring home for roasting. You see, if you have a bit of time, roasting cauliflower is a guaranteed road to deliciousness.

I Am... Spicy Jalapeno Honey Garlic Chicken Thighs

I love garlic, but whenever I peel and chop it my fingers end up smelling like garlic for the rest of the day. I haven't resorted to buying peeled garlic (yet!) and I recently just discovered a new garlic peeling trick at saveur.com. All you do is crush the cloves (they suggest using the heel of your hand, I use the flat of my knife) then dump them into a bowl. Put another same sized bowl on top, hold them together and shake. The shaking rubs all the cloves together and somehow their skins fall off.
