I Am... Sunday Brunch: Buttermilk Totoro Pancakes and Bacon
[caption id="attachment_11171" align="alignnone" width="1450"] Accidental ombre totoros. Otherwise known as a little too much time spent in the pan :)[/caption] It’s the last week of October and you know what that means! Totoro Week! If you know me (even just a little bit) you know that I’m obsessed with all things cute. And of course cute includes Hayao Miyazaki's Totoro! He’s furry, he’s friendly, he’s absolutely adorable. It’s been my lifelong wish to meet a totoro in real life. Since I don't think that's ever really going to happen, every October, I've been dressing up my food in a celebration of Halloween and Totoro.

It's well documented that I have an obsession with mini food things. Here's a secret: I've always dreamed of starting a food blog solely for miniature foods. I would die of cuteness every single time I'd work on it. Maybe one day I'll do it, but in the meantime, I'm pretty happy mini-fying every recipe that comes my way.

It's a pumpkin party! October is pumpkin season and even though I haven't been to the pumpkin patch, I've been pumpkin-ing it up like crazy. I know there's a bit of pumpkin backlash, what with the obsessions with pumpkin spice lattes and all, but it's okay with me, even if it's incredibly basic to be into pumpkin. I love the way it tastes: earthy, and comforting, and so full of fall.

Have you guys ever heard of hygge? It's the Danish word for cozy, but it's also so much more: it's feeling, a mood, a warm mug filled with your favorite tea on a rainy day, tucked under a fluffy blanket with your favorite person. Hygge is taking a regular everyday occurrence and infusing it with meaning. It's one of the prevailing forces in my life and I'm obsessed.

Did you guys have an awesome week? I absolutely did! Last weekend, Mike and I had the best time hanging with Alana and her man, Moses. We spent our time making dim sum and even though there was an incident with an iPhone and the hot tub, a good time was had by all. I was planning on making Hainanese chicken rice for dinner, but the iPhone needed the rice more than we did, so we ended up having some pasta with Chinese roast pork. It was delicious!

I had some leftover roast pumpkin in the fridge, and since it's grilled cheese season, the only right thing to do was sandwich it between layers grilled crisp buttered bread with sage, mozzarella, and a fried egg. This sandwich has everything right going for it: the earthiness of the sage plays well with the sweet roasted pumpkin; the over easy egg gives you a bit of yolk action; and the mozzarella is the meltiest. It's fall in a sandwich!

Cauliflower is a magical vegetable. It's delicious as is – especially roasted – and, just like broccoli, it can be made into a multitude of other shapes. Here, I shaped cauliflower into what I think of as the classic hash brown patty: a slightly rounded rectangle.

Every time I make zoodles, I turn to Mike and say, "we really should eat more zoodles." I'm a huge zucchini fan, regardless of how it's cooked, but turn them into noodles and I'm a zucchini monster. Zoodles are delicious no matter what, but I think they're especially good in this Japanese inspired take on dan dan noodles.

Guys, it's grilled cheese season. Technically, grilled cheese doesn't need a season, but if it had one, this would be it: crisp chilly air and sunny short days. The perfect weather for crunchy bread and warm gooey cheese. Spinach and mozzarella go together like, well, spinach and mozzarella. They happen to be one of my go-to combos, weather own it's own, pasta, dip, or, in grilled cheese.

I have a thing for breakfast foods. It's kind of ironic though, because I don't really eat breakfast on a regular basis. I'm more of a start my day with coffee kind of person. I hardly ever take the time to make myself a meal before diving into whatever it is that needs to get get done that day. My lack of eating breakfast on the regular may be the exact reason why I'm so obsessed. When I do take the time to breakfast – yes, I use breakfast as a verb – I want to do it completely right.

Happy October! I am so ready for cozy sweaters, bunny slippers, and ALL the fall food. I'm super excited to be getting into heavier fare. I love salads, but I love casseroles, stews, and soups even more. I know the header photo is of me in a skirt and bare legs, but Southern California weather be damned, I'm turning up the AC and the oven!

Fried rice – is there anything better? I love how you can take innocent, singular ingredients and turn them into so much more. It's funny how much regular, plain rice can change from being fluffy and slightly sticky, to crisp, intensely flavored and moreish. It's absolutely one of my favorite things to make and eat. I like it simple and plain, with just eggs or all dressed up, like this BLT version.
