I Am... Totoro Pancake Tutorial: Easy Totoro Pancake Art
I'm back for another day in Totoro Week with some super easy Totoro pancake art! I've made Totoro pancakes before but never pancake art style. What's pancake art you ask? Well, it's when crazy talented artists make multiple colors of pancake mix and then draw on a pan or griddle. It's INSANE. I've devoted way too much of my life to watching pancake art videos on YouTube. I'm not nearly as talented as those peeps, but a simple Totoro I can do. And so can you!

Hai! I'm coming at you with a Totoro cream cheese bagel because it's Totoro Week! Why is Totoro Week starting on a Wednesday you ask? Well, because way back in 2013(!!) I dressed up spam musubi as Totoro and almost died of cuteness. It was the first time I dressed up food as Totoro and I was hooked. It was right around halloween and so the year after that, instead of thinking of a costume for me, I decided to dress up some other food as Totoro and declared the week before halloween Totoro Week. Yup, that is the not-so-interesting birth story of Totoro Week.

It's Fall! Officially the season of fuzzy sweaters and CHEESE. It's the most wonderful time of the year because you get to eat ALL the cozy foods without people looking at you like you're crazy. If they do, just tell them you're working on your winter body. Winter body is totally a thing. You need a little bit extra to keep the cold out.

I made these biscuits and Mike didn't want to try them because they were too brown. He also claimed that he doesn't like biscuits. I have to admit, these aren't the prettiest biscuits. They are too brown. And you can't really see the layers. I used a glass to cut them out instead of a cookie cutter and it basically squished everything together. BUT...they taste good! I mean, I know we eat with our eyes first and all that, but these guys legitimately are really, really tasty.

I love Totoro! If you have never seen the film, My Neighbor Totoro, I hope you have a chance to soon. It’s about two little girls who move to the country with their dad so they can be closer to their mom who is recovering at a nearby hospital. They discover magical creatures in their backyard forest and go on several adventures. It’s fluffy and fun, perfect if you’re feeling nostalgic about childhood. Every October I do an informal Totoro Week where I dress up food as Totoro because in another life I would totally be a kyaraben maker. I love kawaii things and Totoro is one of the most kawaii of all. Plus, he is awesome to make into food. Here's a little roundup of all the Totoro food I've made the past 5 years. It's Fri-YAY! This week has been so gorgeously fall. The air is crisp, it's warm and sunny during the day and chilly at night, and the full moon has been incredible. Last Monday was the Mid-Autumn Festival and Mike and I celebrated by hanging out on our deck, watching the moon, and eating mooncakes. Apparently this year was Mike's first ever mooncake. Wait. I just confirmed that with him and apparently he has eaten mooncake before, but he's just never really liked them!? The one we had this year was okay though, according to him!

The other day Mike and I were starving. Okay, I guess I was the only one was starving because I'm really the only person in this house who gets hangry. Mike's more like a lion, the kind of dude that can eat a big meal and then is seemingly okay for three days without eating. It's so annoying! I, on the other hand, feel the need to eat constantly. I feel like I went through three bags of cauliflower gnocchi last week alone. Anyway, hangry + zero leftovers in the fridge pretty much means that I think of delivery. I really wanted to order take out but even that seemed like it would be an insurmountable wait. Thankfully we had a bag of noodles in the fridge so I could make my super easy 15 minute chicken chow mein!

Now that it's fall, I'm all about the carbs. I have to work on my winter body, after all ;) Jokes aside, I really do find that the cooler weather makes me want to eat ALL the things, which makes me a much more fluffier person in the fall and winter months, compared to spring and summer. I try to combat this by going on super long walks and dragging my butt to the gym (very very occasionally), but the thing that I find works best for me is being aware of what I'm eating and kind of sort of calorie counting.

Now that we're just days away from the first day of fall, it's hot pot season! I'm coming at you with this sweet and sour Vietnamese hot pot situation that is going to warm you right up. Hot pot, if you haven't had it, is hands down, one of the best ways to eat, especially when the weather is cool. Essentially, it's a bunch of ingredients laid out at the table with a simmering pot of soup in the middle. Everything goes in the pot, which is on a portable burner, and is simmered. Everyone pops things in, scoops things out, eats, chats, and has a good time. It's casual, fun, infinitely customizable, and delicious!
